One year ago today, I sat in the Historic Courthouse at a Board of Commissioners meeting. My purpose for attending was as a citizen of Gilpin County to ask the Commissioners to drop the idea of putting a new tax on our ballot to pay for the Rec Center.
After I gave my three-minute plea, I sat down to witness the following (in a nutshell):
- Sandy Hollingsworth and Susan Berumen voted to have our County Attorney draw up ballot language to get what became 1A on the ballot in November. Marie Mornis voted against the move.
- Sandy Hollingsworth and Susan Berumen voted to move forward with a plan to spend $1.3 million for a new food pantry! Marie Mornis voted against the motion.
- All three commissioners voted to spend $88,600 to pay for an after-school teen program at the Rec Center which only serves an average of 22 kids.
I sat there wondering what the heck they were doing! They are pushing a tax increase proposal on the ballot because they said the budget can’t sustain the Rec Center without a “dedicated funding source” from the people. There was talk of closing the pools for the entire year, eliminating our County Fair, etc. Threats.I wondered how they could get away with putting a FOREVER tax on the people for the Rec Center at the same meeting they authorized a move to spend more than a million dollars for a new Food Pantry which was only open 1/2 day a week!
As for the after-school program - really? Why should the taxpayers pay to babysit teenagers after school?
AND THEN IT CAME TO ME - AN AWAKENING…
”The people don’t know.”
And so…The Gilpin Light was born!
This blog is non-partisan. I have written facts, with substantiating documentation on each blog post.
- We the people WON the vote to STOP that Forever tax!
- We the people fought to get our First Amendment Right to Free Speech back in Gilpin County and WON!
- We the people are not going to stop fighting what has now changed by these two Commissioners (Hollingsworth and Berumen) to a Community Annex with a commercial kitchen and office spaces instead of replacing our food pantry for much less than the (admitted) new cost of $1.5 million. I have requested the current proposed cost, but am being denied by our County Manager, Ray Rears. It has been nearly three months!
- We the people are fighting to revise the Employee Handbook, deleting the line stating: “Employees and Officials may provide factual and objective election information to the public in the routine performance of their official duties.” This was a problem during the 1A tax proposal when employees at the Rec Center were actively campaigning for the passage of that tax. (We have signed Affidavits). After all, “factual and objective” can be different to different folks! Ray Rears told me they’ll “revisit the Handbook in November.” After both elections are over!
- We the people will continue to shine the light on the darkness in Gilpin County, regardless of the vitriol coming from those who don’t want the truth exposed. Please speak out!
BUT NOW - PLEASE READ THIS:
I have to report to you that during this current election (ballots arrived in your mailbox last week), I am being censored. Yes, in Gilpin County. Election interference is real, and this writer is experiencing it in real time.
Our last blog post was regarding the debate organized for the two Rep. commissioner candidates. I posted the column written by the owner of The Weekly Register-Call newspaper. Mr. Sweeney attended the planned debate and wrote his opinion about the event. I sent it out in my last blog,
“DEBATE?!? Yes! No! Jessica Lovingier Kays on the GO!”
but for ease of research time…here it is again!
Since that post, all Hell has broken loose in this county!
You would think I was a liar, a cheater, a thief…or worse!
I am writing truth here, with proof, yet the newspapers won’t
even print them, A local social media site (Golden Gate Canyon
Neighbors and Friends) removed the post where I shared Mr. Sweeney’s
newspaper column 🔺 citing their “No Politics Policy” which I copied for you
below. You decide if you think sharing a newspaper column about the
debate broke the rule!
Here is the actual policy of GGCN&F:
Would that policy prohibit the posting of Mr. Sweeney’s column?
The Weekly Register-Call edited out of my
Letter to the Editor any mention of truthful, negative information
about current Commissioner candidate Jessica Lovingier Kays
(former County Clerk) who was the subject of an FBI and local
investigations into her actions regarding money spent during her
time as an elected Clerk and Recorder for Gilpin
County, among other things. The Mountain-Ear refused to publish
the letter, period!
Below is the actual article published in The Weekly Register-Call
at the time of the investigation, (in response to a reader saying I had no
proof), but they refused to publish it now. Instead, they put a
disclaimer at the top of my letter stating they cannot
independently verify the allegations against Jessica!
Their own paper published the original stories.
Here is the proof of the censorship of my Letter to the
Editor. You decide.
Here is what made the paper…
If we can’t get the newspapers to print their own articles from
the past about a candidate in today’s election, then the people
don’t have all the information they need to make a choice.
My own opinion is that to ignore factual information on
elected officials, regarding taxpayer money spent on personal
items (among other things) is worth consideration, especially since
Jessica Lovingier Kays is again running for elected office in our
County. This time as a Commissioner! If Jessica is your candidate,
fine. If Marie Mornis is your candidate, fine! I just want to know
truth, and think you may, too.
Channel 7 News covered the scandal. Newspaper
articles from the time in question are posted at
the QR code and/or the link below. If you care
about free and fair elections in this country, then
please look at the blog with the links below, and let
me know if you think the information was worth
sharing:
My last word..
It is a sad day in America when we are being censored,
chastised for getting facts out to the voters/taxpayers.
But you know what? This is worth fighting for, and
that’s why I’m putting it out to you. Who has the
right to shut your mouth? When you know something,
you should be free to share it with others who will be
voting. For the press to censor the people, and for the
County to work against the will of the people is wrong
on every level.
This is a critical
election in Gilpin County. I hope you appreciate this
attempt to get factual information to you that you will
not get from other sources.
We MUST fight censorship ALL the time!
If not us, WHO? If not now, WHEN?
May God bless you, Gilpin County and the
United States of America in all elections.
Very sincerely yours,
Donna Okray Parman
